On Success…

Everyone wants to be a success. I have never met anyone yet who has ever said, “I would like to be a failure!” The problem lies in that most people have difficulty in clearly defining what success means to them.

Since I believe that success is a journey and not a destination, it is important to “get on the right track” and determine, as an individual, what success really is. There are many definitions of success.  However, as a former coach, I personally subscribe to the definition of UCLA basketball coach John Wooden who is probably the most successful coach in the history of college athletics. He said, “Success is the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

I like this definition because the individual is the determining factor of success. If he has used that which he has to his utmost capabilities, then he can truly have “peace of mind.” It is this “Peace of Mind” that Vince Lombardi was inferring when he said, “I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour…his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear…is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – Victorious!”

Be yourself – but the  best self you were created to be.  Believe in yourself and have the guts to bet on yourself. “Strive for the slef-respect that comes from giving your best to whatever you do, and measure success by the degree to which you are at peace with yourself.”
