The Winning Edge

One of my personal mantras is to be inspirational as much as you are aspirational. I learned this a long time ago from my father. Not only was he a great motivator, but he mastered the art of communication. He knew not only what to say, but when to say it and how.

During my playing days in high school, at Florida State University, and briefly with the New York Giants I would always turn to a small spiral bound booklet that my father created when I needed inspiration. “The Winning Edge” was not only a collection of motivational and inspirational quotes and thoughts, but they were hand-picked by my father.  I always felt like it was his way of motivating me. When I read the words I heard his voice. The messages always applied to a turning event in my life. He was speaking to me.

Below is the introduction that my father wrote for “The Winning Edge” collection. Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing several of these motivational and inspirational thoughts and quotes, because they go beyond athletics. The messages are applicable to anyone who wants to get the most out of life and succeed.  Enjoy!

———————————————————————————————————————————-

“The Winning Edge” is a collection of motivational and inspirational thoughts. In the 16 years I have been involved in athletics as a player and coach, I have been fascinated by the intangible aspects that determine performance. More often than not, it is these intangible qualities that make the difference between success and failure.

Athletes often hear their coaches say, “Get up for the game” but few athletes have had that explained to them. I believe “Getting Up” is a psychological and emotional experience that cannot be turned on and off. I believe it is an outlook on life…a positive approach to living. It is this outlook that is behind the motivation and inspiration for truly great performances in all aspects of life.

It is the purpose of “The Winning Edge” to focus on some of these motivational and inspirational thoughts. It is intended for young people involved in athletics, but it has a message for all who read it. It is my greatest desire that “The Winning Edge” will be of some help to those who want to “Get Up for the game”…the most important game…the Game of Life.
