Numbers Don’t Lie

White lies. Bold-faced lies. Lying through your teeth. Half-truths. Omissions. Broken promises. Fabrications. Fib. Exaggeration.

All of the above are forms of lies. Do we lie as a joke or to escape punishment? Is it intentional as a means of deceptive gain? Or is it innocent due to a confused mind where right and wrong are gray? The reason why we lie is somewhat irrelevant. We all do it. In fact, a paper published in 2010 in Human Communication Research found that the average person tells 1.65 lies per day.

What lies are you most likely to hear from men? “I’m on my way” and “I haven’t had that much to drink ” are very popular. At the top of the women’s charts are classics such as “It was on sale” and “Nothing’s wrong…I’m fine.”

You know who never, ever, ever lies?

Your numbers. Men lie, women lie, children lie, but your numbers never lie. Did you make the financial number? Did you meet the product commercialization deadline? Did you manage spend to your budget? You see, numbers are black and white. There is no gray. You either won or lost. You either achieved the target or you didn’t.

Many of the subscribers of this blog have heard me quote Bill Parcels, Super Bowl winning head coach of the NY Giants, before on this matter – “You are what your record says you are!”
