Stamina

Yesterday, millions of Americans did something seldom done these days…they said thank you to our government officials. Because President’s Day is a federal holiday we received our first official “day off” of 2013. Presidents’ Day was started by President Nixon, to honor all past presidents of the United States, and set on the day when Washington’s Birthday was celebrated.

The Importance of Leadership Stamina

One of the most important, and overlooked, characteristics of leadership is stamina. You won’t find this mentioned in books, nor will it be part of the curriculum of any kind of leadership program. Leaders are constantly looking to make their organizations or teams better. They are constantly rethinking strategy. They are constantly reworking things. In fact, something within the structure of an organization is being investigated today and seen as it will look tomorrow. Effective leaders will then implement sustainable initiatives that will lead the business to continued improvement and future success.

In order to do all this a leader must have stamina. Physical. Mental. Psychological. There are intense demands on the business that attack stamina and your ability to stay the course. It’s the battle versus “good enough.” It’s the challenge of bouncing back from a setback. It’s the mental energy to be persistent in the face of difficulties. It’s the emotional strength to face up to the regular assaults that are required to implement positive change.

Taking time off to recharge the batteries helps maintain this balance and stamina. You recoup and refuel. You block out all the white noise which, in turn, provides clarity of mind. You do the little things that you’re never able to do. This reduces anxiety and gives you strength.

Disengaging from the business may have a negative connotation in your organization, but it’s healthy and supports leadership stamina.

I never really thought about President’s Day as a holiday….until now. Thank you, George.
