Power of Focus

The power of focus.

It has been 11 years since the Super Bowl has been played in New Orleans. This is a city rife with stories of former college and NFL players being lured out of the protected environment of their hotels and into the greatest adult playground – Bourbon Street.

I played in the Sugar Bowl there my freshman year at Florida State University against Auburn. To say that there are distractions playing a championship game in that city would be an understatement. You don’t have to go looking for trouble. It knows where you are and it will come find you.

A few players learned a very quick lesson that you don’t venture too far off Bourbon Street late at night.  The result? You get jumped and beat down. Other players wanted to have a good time with the ladies out at the clubs. The only problem was that some of them ended up making out with men…as in trannies. They are still haunted by that from teammates 20 years later. And the world-famous New Orleans beads? Sometimes you don’t need a bead for the deed. I remember standing in the middle of Bourbon Street one night with a few of my teammates and a prominent member of the current ESPN College Gameday crew. Three young women walk up to us, lift their shirts, and asked the ESPN host if he wanted “a feel.” He turned red and looked at me for some type of head nod.  I remember telling him, “My man, you’re not from the South so you should know that it would be ungentlemenlike to decline such an offer.”

Tomorrow, two disciplined, throwback teams will take the field to play for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. Both teams are laser-focused. We haven’t heard one story about New Orleans “distractions” from either team even though they are there. It’s a different era now. The social media explosion has changed the way athletes behave. Today, one foolish decision or drunken moment can be uploaded to Twitter in seconds.

It’s refreshing to see professionals do something special for the love of the game. If you’re going to do something, do it right. The power of individuals sacrificing for a team goal is potent. It allows you to develop a “we won’t be denied” mindset. It allows for surgical precision in execution.

It’s the power of focus.
