Don’t Compromise

There are certain essentials in life that you just can’t live without. Oxygen. Water. Food. Clothing. Shelter. If you asked people to extend the list the most common answers would include God, love, family, friends, and money. Unfortunately, there are also others who would include non-essentials like cell phones, computers, the Internet, and Facebook.

There are also things that you won’t compromise on. Your integrity. Your faith. Your values. I’m a Diet Coke guy. My answer is an emphatic “No” when I order a Diet Coke at a restaurant and the server says, “Is Diet Pepsi okay?” There are some things you just won’t compromise on.

What about in business? There are two things you should establish as essentials that you can’t do without and won’t compromise on. What are they? Talent and Leadership. It doesn’t matter how good your product, services, or programs are. They only way you can drive “sustainable” growth and long-term success is by having a superior focus on people.

Attract, hire, develop, and retain top talent. Identify leaders in your organization and invest in them early to amplify the impact they will have on others. With a superior focus on talent and leadership you can go from worst to first quickly. You can shorten the timeframe to turnaround or rebuild an organization. You can also dramatically impact culture and performance. This is why head coaches, general managers, and the front office matter so much in organizations like the NFL. It’s about building your talent and leadership from the inside out.

Don’t settle. Don’t compromise. Treat talent and leadership as essentials that you can’t live without.

Your reward? A world-class organization that is built to last.
