What’s your plan?

Why do we abandon our plans the minute something goes wrong?  

Boxers do it all the time once they get hurt in a fight. Football coordinators ditch their game plans quickly if they fall behind early. These are short events that happen over minutes. What about business plans that are designed to last over a 12-month period or multiple years?

Two things baffle me when it comes to business plans. One is when people don’t have one. The other is when people have one but they abandon it if they don’t have immediate success. Business plans are a roadmap to guide your business over an extended period of time. In their simplest form business plans:

  1. Set goals & objectives
  2. Define tactics and activities
  3. Establish milestone and deadlines for tracking implementation

Do I have the right plan?

The best way to know is to ask yourself some basic questions that are bulletproof to make a business plan most likely to be successfully implemented:

  • Is it simple?  – Nothing derails a good plan faster than complexity. 
  • Is it specific?  – Are your goals and objectives concrete and measurable?
  • Is it realistic?  – Does it pass the “What are you smoking?” test? 
  • Is it complete?  – Does it include everything you need to achieve your goals and objectives?  This is the Prego spaghetti sauce test…”It’s in there!” 

If you can answer yes to the four questions above then you’ll have a practical business plan that will create results. A friend of mine has a simple motto for his business: “Plan your work. Work your plan.” A practical business plan has 10 parts implementation (sweat equity) for every one part strategy. 

Developing a strong Plan A will keep you from having to revert to Plan B most of the time. Buster Douglas was a 42-1 underdog when he knocked out Mike Tyson on February 11, 1990. It was one of those “where were you” epic moments that I still remember vividly to this day. I’m pretty sure that if Iron Mike had a strong game plan going into the fight that he wouldn’t have ended up on the canvas that night.    

For that reason alone I’ve changed his quote to “Everyone needs a plan for when they get punched in the mouth.”
